NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. has expressed support to the move to extend the Bacolod-Silay Airport runway from two kilometers to 2.5 kilometers.

"We have been trying to improve the airport that's why I give my full support to the proposed runway extension and terminal expansion. It would be advantageous to the province," the governor said.

Marañon made the statement as Bacolod City Representative Evelio Leonardia (lone district) and Negros Occidental Occidental Representative Alfredo Benitez (third district), along with their colleagues in the House of Representatives, vowed to strongly endorse the proposal to extend the runway after conducting an inspection of the airport Thursday.

The legislators are members of the House Contingent of the Congressional Oversight Committee on Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (COCCAAP) and House committee on transportation.

Meanwhile, Marañon said that Ibaraki Airport officials are serious in negotiating for the opening of direct flights from Bacolod-Silay Airport to Ibaraki, Japan.

He said that Ibaraki representatives and Cebu Pacific officials have discussed the matter during a dinner he hosted for them last Wednesday.

The airline company will study and make a survey about the possibilities of the direct flights, Marañon said.

The governor added that the CIQ or Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) system would not be a problem once the direct flights push through.
