ESCALANTE CITY -- A policeman died while his son and eight others were injured in a road accident at Kilometer 97 National Highway of Barangay Alimango in this city Monday afternoon.
Police identified the fatality as Senior Police Officer 3 Roy Mendaros, 46, detailed at Jimalalud Municipal Police Station and resident of Barangay Dayuyong, Jimalalud in Negros Oriental.
Injured were the 12-year-old son of Mendaros along with Jean Melgar, 28; Nida Matigayon, 48; Crispin Daguna, 22; Esperanza Melgar, 54; Nelia Suelto, 44; Isabel Matigayon, 56; and a 17-year-old, all residents of Escalante City, and Nelson Arquillo, 44, of E.B. Magalona town.
SPO2 Manuel Liguaton, desk officer of Escalante City Police Station, said Mendaros was driving his Kawasaki motorcycle with his son at around 3:45 p.m. from Danao Port when they bumped into the tricycle driven by Marcelino Baroc, 48.
Investigation showed that Mendaros was driving fast and did not notice the rough road when he lost control of his motorcycle and hit the tricycle.
Liguaton said Mendaros and his son came from Cebu on board a vessel that docked in Danao Port, Escalante City. They were traveling to Jimalalud when they met an accident.
The victims were rushed to the Vicente Gustilo District Hospital in Escalante City, where Mendaros was declared dead.
Baroc voluntarily surrendered to the Escalante City Police Station, but was released at about 10 a.m. Tuesday after his reglementary period lapsed. (MAP)
