NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he is planning to discuss with President Benigno S. Aquino III the proposal for the one-island region during the president’s visit in the province Thursday.

"I will ask the President for an executive order for the realization of the one- island region like the creation of Caraga, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Mt. Province," Marañon said.

Aquino will visit the province on Thursday to inaugurate the 22-megawatt solar power plant at San Carlos Solar Energy Inc. in San Carlos City and the P335-million diversion road and new Himogaan Bridge in Sagay City.

The creation of one-island region for Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental has been a consensus of the local officials of the two provinces to separate Negros Occidental from Western Visayas and Negros Oriental from Central Visayas.

Officials of both provinces have agreed to hold the Negros Island Summit in the coming months to concretize their plans.

The summit will be held after the respective Provincial Development Councils (PDCs) of the two provinces have already gathered all the resolutions supporting the creation of the Negros Island Region.

A total of 604 villages in Negros Occidental and 557 villages in Negros Oriental have been asked to pass their respective resolutions to support the move to create a separate region for the two provinces.

Marañon said he authorized Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella to speak on the one-island region proposal during the Regional Development Council-Western Visayas (RDC-6) meeting with congressmen at the House of Representatives today. Concerns from the different districts of Western Visayas will be discussed during the meeting.

"I told him (Puentevella) to bring the matter up since I am not available as the provincial government is busy with the preparations for the presidential visit," the governor said.

Puentevella earlier said he was invited by Iloilo City Representative Jerry Treñas and Negros Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez.

"I will also bring up the problem on the lack of lights along the airport access road from Bacolod City leading to the Bacolod-Silay Airport," the mayor said. “We hope to have the congressmen help us with projects for the city and the province.”
