TEN private colleges and universities in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, will impose tuition increase for school year 2014-2015.

Dr. Rex Casiple, education program specialist of Commission on Higher Education (Ched) in Western Visayas Region, has said in a television interview that three of the 10 schools are in Bacolod.

The schools have asked for at least seven-percent tuition increase, which will go to the additional pay of their teachers and modernization of facilities, said Casiple of the reasons for the increase sought by the colleges and universities.

"It has already been approved most likely at this time," he added.

Casiple, however, did not divulge the names of the private tertiary institutions that sought tuition increase.

He said that Ched wants to ensure that higher education institutions (HEIs) meet the guidelines provided by the law, especially the requirement for consultation, and allocation on where the increase should go.

Aside from that, the HEIs should at all times be transparent in their processes leading to the application for increase, Casiple said.

For school year 2014-2015, about 30 public and private colleges and universities in the region have expressed intention to increase their tuition.

“We have a tentative list of these schools and we are still reviewing their documents,” Casiple said.

He said that some of these schools are not seeking increases in tuition but only in miscellaneous fees. (TDE)
