THE summit on the proposed Negros Island Region will be held on Friday, June 6, at Zaycoland in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. confirmed on Tuesday.

He said the gathering will be attended by about 200 officials of both Negros provinces to be led by him and Governor Roel Degamo of Negros Oriental.

"We will then present the outcome of the summit to President (Benigno) Aquino, including the resolutions of the local government units, non-government organizations, and the business sector supporting the move,” the governor said.

He added: “It still depends on how we could convince the President. We will show him that this is the will of the mayors and the people of the two provinces."

The National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) regional director in Western Visayas had earlier issued a statement opposing the move because of financial reasons, citing the cost of creating regional offices for a new region.

Aquino said during his visit to Negros Occidental last month that he delegated the matter to Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

Roxas has also been invited to the summit.

Marañon said that some concerns like the different dialects of the two provinces could be discussed during the summit as well as the location of the regional center.

"For me, the dialect is not a barrier for the grouping of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental into one region. About 40 percent of the people in Occidental can speak Cebuano which is the dialect of Negros Oriental and also about the same percent of people there could speak Ilonggo,” he added.

The officials of the two provinces intend to convince President Aquino to issue an executive order for the creation of the Negros Region like the those issued to form the Caraga Region, Mimaropa Region 4B, and Cordillera Administrative Region. (TDE)
