AN OFFICIAL of the San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. (SCBI) said their bio-ethanol plant in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental no longer emits foul odor after the management addressed the pollution problem.

The foul smell from the plant’s untreated waste water has been the subject of complaints from the city residents in the past months.

Arnel Amparo, SCBI plant manager, said though they are still hoping that Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will give them the go-signal to proceed with the barging out of their waste materials.

He said this is one of the conditions set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the issuance of a barging out permit, adding that the city government of San Carlos has already given its approval.

Amparo said the management of SCBI has appealed to the governor and sent two letters to his office seeking his approval.

However, Marañon, who said that he is an environmentalist, stated that barging out would only transfer the waste materials from one place to another.

Amparo said they decided not to pursue the issue anymore, but they are still hoping that the governor will reconsider his decision.

For now, the SCBI has an alternative in dealing with the pollution problem which they call “irrigation.”

Under the process, they release their waste water to the canefields which helps in the fertilization of the crops.

However, he said this is good as long as it does not rain as their water storage may overflow.

As of now, SCBI is in full operation, Amparo said.
