Police readies charges vs bizman in firearms raid

BUSINESSMAN Eugene Gawat is facing charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition after policemen recovered a cache of high-powered firearms during a raid at his rented house in Sta. Clara Subdivision in Bacolod City Wednesday night.

Senior Superintendent Pedrito EScarilla, officer-in-charge of Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), said on Thursday the Regional Intelligence Unit will file the case against Gawat, a tenant of the Jalandoni family residence who is engaged in jewelry business.

Gawat remains at large as of press time.

The raiding team led by Supt. Ronald Allan Gepana of RIU-6, Senior Insp. Edgar Gulmatico, commander of Police Station 3, and Chief Insp. Cresencio Cordero Jr. of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-6 served the search warrant issued by Judge Anita Guanzon-Chua of Regional Trial Court Branch 51 in Bacolod City.

However, Gawa was not present during the raid, Escarilla said.

Police recovered from the rented house of Gawat 16 units of AK-47 riffles, two .45 caliber pistol, two shotguns, 140 empty magazines of AK-47, 24 magazine pouches of AK-47, 25 bayonets, 24 cleaning kits for AK-47.

Escarilla said the operatives also recovered assorted ammunition such as 3,500 rounds for caliber 7.62, 320 rounds for caliber .30, 1,000 rounds for M-16, 320 rounds for caliber .308, 600 rounds for .9mm, 400 rounds for caliber .40, 400 rounds for caliber .380, 300 rounds for caliber .45, and one unit of undetermined long firearm.

He said the recovered firearms and live ammunition were turned over to the Crime Laboratory of the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office.

Escarilla said the suspect has been monitored possessing undetermined number firearms, and the Philippine National Police applied for the issuance of search warrant to seize the firearms.
