KABANKALAN City Mayor Isidro Zayco confirmed on Wednesday that he has requested the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to conduct an investigation on the existence of a sinkhole at the plaza of Sitio Jalandoni in Barangay Oringao.

The funnel-shaped sinkhole measures around 3.5 meters in diameter and three meters in depth. It has an opening of around 1.7 meters.

Zayco said he requested the MGB investigation after five residents fell down the sinkhole and lost consciousness.

The MGB conducted the investigation on the sinkhole on June 28, and Zayco said they are still waiting for the results.

The five residents were strolling at the basketball court around 9 p.m. on June 26 when they suddenly fell into the sinkhole.

Rescuers assisted the victims who became unconscious not only because of the impact of the fall, but also because of the gaseous smell inside the pit.

A second team managed to retrieve the victims and rushed them to a hospital.

Zayco said there was a suspicion that the occurrence of the sinkhole is due to the presence of an underground river in the area. (TDE)
