THE registration of Lisa Oppen Cojuangco, daughter of former ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., as a voter in the fourth district of Negros Occidental has fueled speculations that she may join politics in the 2016 elections.

Phoebus Teruel, election officer of Pontevedra town, said Tuesday that Cojuangco came to his office a few days back.

He said that they have already posted the list of individuals who have registered for the 2016 elections and that the applications would be subject to the approval of the Election Registration Board.

Reports said that Lisa Cojuangco may run either for mayor of Pontevedra or for Congress as incumbent Representative Jeffrey Ferrer is already in his last term.

Her brother, Carlos "Charlie" Cojuangco, is a former congressman of the fourth district while her sister-in-law, the late Rio Diaz Cojuangco, served as vice mayor of Pontevedra.

Ferrer may field his wife, Mayor Juliet Marie Ferrer of La Carlota City, to succeed him, according to reports, and he may also run for mayor of Bago City or vice governor in 2016.

A source said that Ferrer is planning to register in Bago City next week. (TDE)
