NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. admitted Tuesday that the opposition of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo to the proposed one-island region will affect the bid to create a separate region for the two Negros provinces.

He said the opposition of Degamo is politically-motivated after the latter said that 70 percent of the residents of Negros Oriental oppose the move.

Marañon said Degamo's statement is conflicting because during their last meeting held in Bacolod City last month, majority of the local officials of Negros Oriental were present and did not register any opposition.

"He is the only official so far that opposes the move," Marañon said.

Reports said that Degamo's stand has something to do with the political squabbles going on among the officials of Negros Oriental. Vice Governor Mark Macias is supporting the bid for the Negros Island Region along with the province's three congressmen.

During the meeting last month, Degamo said he does not oppose the plan but he wants to conduct a feasibility study first and he asked that the process in the creation of the one-island region should not be railroaded.

The Negros Oriental governor also said that he will listen to the sentiments of the people and will assess if the proposed one-island region could uplift the living condition of the people in his province.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said they are getting mixed signals from the Oriental side.

"(But) this should not stop us from collating all pertinent data to convince the President that a one-island region is feasible. The statement of Governor Degamo does not help the one-island region vision. This will only make it difficult to convince the President," Lacson said.
