NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. urged on Tuesday all government units (LGUs) in the province to activate and convene their respective Local Price Coordinating Councils to assess the prices of goods and supply situation in their respective towns and cities.

They should also identify and undertake measures to ensure the stability of prices and supply of basic necessities and prime commodities in their areas, he added.

The governor’s directive came on the heels of the increases in prices of rice and other food products in the province.

Marañon, who chairs the Provincial Price Coordinating Council, also asked the LGUs to submit their price monitoring reports to his office.

Cities and municipalities are furnished with copies of the price list from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for their reference, he said.

Meanwhile, Marañon lamented the refusal of the National Food Authority (NFA) to sell rice to the Negros Occidental.

"We requested to purchase rice from the NFA but they refused," the governor said.

He said the increase in prices of rice is due to hoarding of stocks by the traders who want to make profit out of it.

In a related development, the new head of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Negros Occidental said they will assist the NFA in the campaign against rice hoarders in the province.

Inspector Roberto Fajardo said they will conduct an inspection of warehouses.

"We will be ready to apprehend businessmen who take advantage of the current situation," Fajardo said.
