A LABOR group in Negros Occidental filed a petition for an P85 increase in minimum wage before the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) Region 6 in Iloilo City.

The General Alliance of Worker’s Association (Gawa) explained that their petition aims to recover the purchasing power of the workers, and for the rate of wages in Western Visayas to be at par with the normal wage level.

At present, workers in Western Visayas receive P287 per day for those working in non-agricultural and commercial industrial establishments at P255, for agricultural plantation workers and non-plantation workers at P245.

Gawa, an alliance of legitimate and independent labor unions in the province, further said the wage increase is urgently needed as prices of petroleum products as well as basic commodities and services keep on increasing.

Meanwhile, the labor group reiterated their worries about the implementationof low tariffs on imported sugar and other agricultural products that will enter the country starting January next year as it may hurt the sugar industry.

Labor representative to the RTWPB in Western Visayas Wennie Sancho, who also chairs Gawa, said they will issue a resolution for the transformation of the sugar industry into a multi-diversified product to preempt the displacement of about 350,000 workers who will be directly and indirectly affected by the Asean Free Trade Agreement (Afta).

Sancho said they are also looking forward to the passage of the Sugarcane Act authored by Rep. Alfredo Benitez .(TDE with reports from and Bea Singuay, UNO-R MassComm Intern)
