AN AMERICAN was found dead inside his room in a budget motel at Yacapin-Aguinaldo streets in Cagayan de Oro around 11:30 am Tuesday, July 22, 2014.
Cogon police identified the victim as Thomas Woodward, 63, of Florida, USA.
According to the motel's management, they never noticed the American went outside of his rented room for days so they suspected “something bad might have happened to the occupant.”
Woodward had stayed in the city for four days already before he had been discovered dead.
"Today [Tuesday] is his fourth day since he checked in. Our room boy first noticed him seated on the toilet bowl lifeless," Maan Martenito, supervisor of the pension house, told Sun*Star Cagayan de Oro yesterday.
Based on its initial investigation, the Scene of the Crimes Operatives (Soco) said Woodward succumbed to natural death.
"Most likely he died of heart attack," said Dr. West Edquila, Soco team leader.
The Soco also found medicines in the room which the team has yet to determine what those are for.
However, Edquila, said they have to verify the real cause of death through autopsy. There were no wounds found on his body.
Documents of Woodward were turned over to Soco. It proved Woodward is a retired officer of the US Navy.
SPO1 Apollo Neil de Las Alas, Cogon police chief investigator, said they will also look into any possible foul play.
"The authorities would still explore the possibilities the foreigner might be or had been meeting a ‘cyber friend’ in the city," de Las Alas furthered.
The remains of Woodward were brought to a funeral homes in the city while authorities are still informing Woodward’s family, de Las Alas said.
