BACOLOD City Councilor Caesar Distrito said Wednesday that the installation of the streetlights at the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road (BSAAR) is set to start in September this year.

Distrito said the P40-million worth streetlighting project is important since it will address the prevalence of stone-throwing and hold-up incidents in the area.

The City Council has approved a resolution requesting immediate action from concerned agencies, particularly the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, to deter the occurrence of said incidents.

“Despite the fact that there is already a prepared project and an allocated budget, commuters and motorists are still being advised to be extra careful and vigilant when passing by the BSAAR. As much as possible the public is being advised not to pass by the access road especially at night,” Distrito said.

Distrito also lauded the City of Talisay for their immediate action after several stone-throwing incidents were reported in the area.

Talisay City Mayor Eric Saratan had called for an emergency meeting after it was reported that last July 13, three vehicles were again hit with stones while passing through the Talisay portion of the BSAAR.

Saratan was told by a DPWH representative that the streetlights could be operational before December.

The mayor said that the absence of street lights in the more than 10-kilometer access road also puts in danger the lives of peace keeping officers or police personnel conducting routine patrol in the area.

The installation of streetlights will be installed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
