THE Bacolod-Korean Friendship Festival is today’s main event in the city, featuring various activities at the Bacolod People’s House.
The City Council has declared August 15 as “Bacolod-Korea Friendship Day.”
The event’s guest of honor is Oh Choong Suk, counselor for Culture and Public Relations of the Korean Embassy and director of the Korean Culture Center in the Philippines.
The event kick offs with an opening rites at 10 a.m.
For the entire day, Bacolodnons will be treated to Korea’s famous cuisines. Other events include a taekwondo clinic and K-Pop dance competition.
“This is more than another festival for us to enjoy. This is also a celebration of friendship and a common pledge to promote two cities,” Mayor Monico Puentevella said.
He added: “The Koreans are one of the reasons why our economy is booming. They come here to study and in return, we make them feel at home.”
Hundreds of Koreans arrive in Bacolod every month either as tourists or students.
Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said Bacolod considers today a significant event after a sisterhood agreement was signed between the City of Bacolod and the Seogu District, Daegu Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea on this same day last year.
The agreement was signed by Puentevella and by Mayor Kan Seong-Ho of the Daegu Metropolitan City.
The sisterhood agreement was intended to strengthen the historical ties and common progress between the two cities while the celebration of the partnership was initially planned during the signing of the agreement.
“The celebration is a platform for the promotion of Bacolod as a choice destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) events in the future,” Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said.
The festival is part of the events lined by the city government to promote Bacolod as a haven for international celebrations. Aside from celebrating the MassKara Festival every October, the city also holds the Bacolaodiat during the Chinese New Year and launched the Indian Festival last year.
