THE Negros Occidental provincial government warned anew operators of commercial fishing boats against engaging in illegal fishing as another purse seiner was apprehended past midnight Tuesday in the southern town of Ilog.

Jose Maria Valencia, provincial legal officer and executive director of Task Force Ilahas, said that F/B Aqua King owned by Sherwin Lim of Hinigaran was intercepted at around 12:15 a.m. with 12 crew men on board led by Geraldo Alolod.

Joint operatives of the Provincial Maritime Command headed by Senior Police Officer 1 Roger Cordero, the Philippine Navy led by Samuel Arnaldo and the Bantay Lawod led by Inspector Gabriel Gutierrez conducted the operation.

A commercial fishing boat also owned by F/B Aqua King was intercepted about a month ago in the neighboring Cauayan town.

Valencia said four officers of the fishing boat were detained and the Provincial Environment Management Office (Pemo) is taking legal remedies to go after those involved in illegal fishing.

Commercial fishing boat using active gears can be held liable for violation of Republic Act 8550. The fishing boat was impounded in Hinigaran, Valencia said.
Valencia said Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. has ordered a continued monitoring of illegal fishing operations especially in southern Negros as he emphasized that municipal fishing grounds should be for small fisherfolk.

He said the operation of the joint operatives was conducted in response to complaints that “superlights” or big fishing boats are encroaching in the municipal waters especially during night time. (TDE)
