A NEW chapter begins in the life of John Chris Ledesma, 19, a resident of Barangay IV, Victorias City who was diagnosed with mandibular ameloblastoma, a tumor or swelling of the jaw.
He is now experiencing a second life after he recovered from the serious illness he suffered for years.
Ledesma was able to get the collective support of Victorias City Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca and the other city officials, Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez, and Cynthia Bantug Rufino as well as those of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
He badly needed the operation and had no one to turn to since his mother Roselyn Ledesma is a solo parent who makes a living only as a fruit vendor.
His father died three years ago.
The teenager caught the attention of Palanca when the mayor had coffee near his mother’s fruit stand.
Witnessing the boy’s condition, the mayor offered to help.
Ledesma was admitted at Makati Medical Center on September 21, and stayed in the hospital for 17 days. He underwent medical procedure and was discharged last October 7.
He is now in the process of recovering from the operation and will undergo another surgery next year.
The medical procedure and other needs amounted to almost P800,000 and with the financial assistance of everyone who cared for the teenager, the operation was a huge success.
“Salamat gid sa pagbuhi sang bata ko” (Thank you giving my son a chance to live),” Roselyn told all those who helped her son.
