Clearing operation worries informal settlers

THE clearing operation at Bag-ong Dalan, Barangay 16 Wednesday alarmed the informal settlers in the area.
After seeing bulldozers raking the area of debris and other obstructions in the road, the informal settlers thought their houses will be demolished.
They were confused whether it was the Bacolod City Government or a private property owner who initiated the clearing of the right portion of the street facing the sea.
However, the clearing operation turned out to be a barangay-initiated move. Two bulldozers cleared the area of illegal structures to remove obstructions and widen the road.
Cesar Beloria of the City Legal Office was unaware of the operation when it was brought to his attention. He immediately proceeded to the area to determine the real score.
The residents informed him about what was happening and they asked him to intervene, fearing the possible demolition of their houses as what they have been hearing about lately.
Beloria said that 150 meters of one side of the street were cleared of debris and obstructions, such bamboos, garbage and other junk.
Some residents said that they are willing to leave the area but the city should provide them with relocation site.
Beloria said the city needs to be aware of these problems so that the City Government can prepare for solutions.
He assured the residents that he will request the City Engineer's Office to survey the area.
He added he will also ask the Bacolod Housing Authority to assess the situation to determine if the informal settlers can pre-qualify for the relocation program of the City Government. (Carla N. Canet)
