BACOLOD CITY -- An Ilonggo senator proposed for the construction of a five-kilometer bridge that will link Negros Occidental and Panay Island.
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said the project is part of the One-Visayas bill, which he will introduce in the Senate.
In the One-Visayas bill, P15 billion annual allocations will be taken from the national budget for the construction of bridges in the Visayas, which will run for five years.
Zubiri said he already met with officials of a Korean firm that is willing to fund the project, which will cost about P1 billion for every kilometer based on a feasibility study.
The proposed Negros-Panay bridge will be modeled after the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Cebu.
“It will only take a 10-minute drive to reach Panay from Negros through the bridge…” Zubiri said.
It will also spur development and strengthen cultural unity between the two islands, he added.
Aside from the Negros-Panay bridge, Zubiri also plans to connect Dumaguete in Negros Oriental to Santander, Cebu. (TED)
