IN A role reminiscent of his savvy as a Negros Slasher in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), Reynel Hugnatan came up with a solid performance in the week that was to earn the honor of being named the KFC-Accel PBA Press Corps’ Player of the Week for the period Oct. 19 to 25 in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup series.
The 6-4 Hugnatan, doing practically all of his damage in the shaded lanes, averaged 17 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists during the week for the Alaska Aces, prompting Alaska coach Tim Cone to say: “We’ve made a concerted effort to get Reynel the ball in the post and it is paying off.”

Hugnatan finished with 14 points and 4 rebounds in Alaska’s 100-79 win over Coca Cola last Friday and followed that up with 20 points and 8 boards in their 105-96 victory against Barangay Ginebra in their game for solo leadership last Sunday.
Hugnatan told Sun.Star Bacolod in a text message he agrees with Cone’s assessment that the Aces have a good chance of fighting for the championship of the ongoing Philippine Cup. “So far, so good, maganda ang nilalaro naming as a team and I hope papasok kami sa finals this time kasi medyo uhaw na rin ang team for a championship,” Hugnatan said.
Meanwhile, another PBA out-of-town game is scheduled on Nov. 7 at the Victorias Sports and Amusement Center in Victorias City between multi-titled San Miguel Beer and Santa Lucia Realty. (HCV)
