Questions that Matter
Saturday, February 4, 2012
NEGROS Occidental Private Schools, Sports, Cultural, and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) has awarded a teacher and an artist with the NOPSSCEA Alumni Excellence Award last January 27 at the gymnasium of the University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos.
Mr. Randdie Cuelo of LCC and Mr. Charlie Co of SJI were given the prestigious award, Cuelo for education and Co for Culture and the Arts.
Mr. Co believes that Negrense artists can go a long way and could compete with other internationally-acclaimed artists. Charlie is one of the founders of the Art Association of Bacolod. The group bonded the artists and came out with an identity that would speak not only of Bacolod but of the whole province as well. It set apart from the traditional art. He is indeed worthy of the award for believing in other artists and encouraging others to pursue the profession and come out with their own identity anchored on the Negrense-Filipino culture.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Mr. Co gives all the opportunities to budding artists to shine through his gallery. He is one of the artists, like Nunie Alvarado, who is not afraid of “going out of the box”.
Mr. Cuelo, on the other hand, chose the road less chosen. Instead of becoming a rich businessman or an entrepreneur, he chose to be a teacher. He wanted to transform society through transforming the minds and hearts of his students through the way of St. Augustine.
Sir Randdie is an alumnus and a faculty member of La Consolacion-Bacolod.
Caroline B. Ong and Stephanie Marie Coo, alumni of St. John’s Institute, were finalists in the search for the outstanding Nopsscea alumni award.
NOPSSCEA also recognized Mr. Rogie Bacosa of LCC- Bacolod as Most Outstanding Teacher, Jeremae Mait of USLS as Most Outstanding Student (tertiary) and Nelson Christian Co of SJI as Most Outstanding Student (secondary).
LCC’s Dr. Carmen Menes and Charita Dacuya were named as Outstanding Administrator and Teacher (pre-elementary), respectively, and USLS Mary jean Lee C. Patindol as Outstanding Tertiary Teacher.
Nopsscea recognizes administrators, teachers, students and alumni once every two years. The next round of awardees shall be on 2014. It recognizes the works of NOPSSCEANS in their fields of endeavor and also appreciates the dedication and unselfishness of the teachers and the diligence and dedication of students.
May the awarding inspire more people to do more. And the awardees shall now become the models for all. Congratulations to the Board of Trustees chaired by Dr. Rosario de Guzman.

Last February 01, UNO-R and Energy Development Corporation had signed a partnership on the Urban Greening Education and the making of a Museum for endemic and rare species of trees. EDC propagates rare and endemic species of trees for the future.
UNO-R is the first academe partner they have chosen in Negros Occidental. The University Community Development Office, supervised by Mrs. Mely Flores, is taking charge of the University Urban Greening project.
Fifty endemic and rare species of trees will be planted inside the university on May 23. This is in line with the celebration of the golden anniversary of UNO-R as a Recollect institution. This is the legacy of UNO-R and EDC to the future generations. The UNO-R museum of trees will be a venue where future generation propagated our very own trees and plants.
It will also remind them of how blessed Negros and the Philippines. This will also prompt them to conserve and save their environment.
St. Lorenzo Ruiz and Ezekiel Moreno; Blessed Pedro Calungsod and Pope John Paul II; Sir Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
