Martial Law was declared Sept. 23, 1972

WHY am I so sure Martial law was declared Sept. 23, 1972? Because I was in the hospital attending to the birth of my youngest son, whom I named David Marcel. He turned forty on Sept. 23.

That night I was quite apprehensive I might be picked up because I was always attacking Marcos on the convention floor and press. Luckily, they identified me as belonging to the group of Gerry Roxas, father of Mar, a moderate oppositionist.

Marcos just antedated the official date of declaration two days earlier to justify the arrest of Ninoy Aquino and others much earlier. But my son always celebrates his birthday on Sept. 23, the night Martial Law was declared.

The Con-Con continued though, of course, on a different tune. There was only the other son of Marcos, not by Imelda, who grabbed the mike and lambasted his father for being a negligent father. No one arrested him. He came and went freely.

How could I forget? Even the banner headline of the Manila Times was dated on Sept. 23, 1972 announcing FM’s declaration of Martial Law.
