Editorial: Highly abominable-A A +A
Monday, August 26, 2013
MEMBERS of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Iloilo City were either not using their heads or simply don’t have one when they swooped down on the radio station of Aksyon Radyo Iloilo before break of dawn, Sunday.
There could be no amount of explanation that can possibly overturn the presumption that these SWAT unit personnel do not deserve to belong to the so-called and so-tagged “elite” unit of the PNP. Caught on the closed-circuit television camera and even aired on nationwide television, what the policemen did was simply abominable, illogical, and clearly manifest of the lack of proper orientation on a “tactical“ situation and scenario such as that which took place at the Iloilo radio station.
The public could very well bet that these SWAT team members may even be ignorant of the basic, fundamental, and rudimentary rights of persons, particularly civilians, provided for under the so-called “Miranda Doctrine.” When they do not know simple rules of engagement, with more reason that these policemen may not even be aware that there exists a set of must-observe “human rights!”
Were the policemen overwhelmed, or excited? Or were they simply ignorant of their proper role as SWAT members?
If these policemen could do this to an outlet belonging to the Fourth Estate, there is greater danger that these cops could very well expose their ignorance against lowly civilians.
