Sharpening of Contradictions-A A +A
Monday, August 26, 2013
MONDAY’S nationwide mass protests, though in varying levels and forms, were clearly a direct demonstration of people's discontentment with the President Benigno "PNoy" Aquino III's regime.
Although the issue of pork barrel served as the trigger and mobilizing issue, the common sentiments in Luneta, Edsa, Mendiola, Bacolod and other main cities and urban centers were pointed on the unbridled corruption, anti people, anti democratic and pro imperialist agenda, policies and practices of the PNoy regime.
PNoy was smacked with insults and turned into a laughing stock because in spite of his last minute turnaround against the pork and pre emptive move against Monday's mass actions, the people still pursued the mass actions.
Obviously they have had enough of PNoy's gimmickry and political stunts.
They know how pork funds have ironically caused mass miseries and furthered the political divide. They know that the crooked politicians used the people and development rhetoric to amass funds. They know that the bulk of the pork goes to their pockets and small fractions are shared to fellow elites and crooks. They know exactly how pork funds are used for strengthening patronage system and trapo politics.
More than that, they know that PNoy has never been serious in running against the interests of his class because they are his real bosses, and will not and cannot reform the ruling political and social system.
Indeed, they know better that PNoy's so called matuwid na daan is nothing but empty liberal political slogan.
After three years poverty has deepened, unemployment soared, landlessness sharpened, human rights violations especially extra judicial killings continue unabated, economic liberalization and privatization caused business closures and mass dislocations.
Even the middle class is unhappy of their economic plight despite being relatively well off than workers and now restive over uncertainties of their jobs and benefits.
In pork and corruption the citizenry have just found a real but practical issue they can connect with their daily lives.
But they know it is just one of the fundamental problems in our society.
Sooner the main contradictions in our society will come to the fore and force everyone to take sides and make decisions -- to advance social change or derail it.
After Monday’s mass action, most will continue with their miserable lives while a few go on with their opportunistic hypocritical life.
As usual, only the real left militants will untiringly and unselfishly continue the mass struggles on the grounds and in the corridors of power with burning hope for a truly sovereign, just and democratic society in near future.
