TO ALL the religious belonging to the Order of St. Augustine and those embracing the Augustinian spirituality, a belated happy fiesta on the Feast of Our Lady of Consolation.
The Philippines is a country full of scams. Last few weeks, we were faced by one of the greatest scams in the history of the country. The scam, that placed the nation in shame. The scam that involved or will involve a lot of people in the government, is at hand. This is the scam that will open the eyes and mouths of every Filipino. This is one, that will really put the country into the pedestal of shame.
The leader of this shameful act is now fast becoming a hero. She has opened a box that will put into the box many Politicians that had and has been enjoying the money of the people. This woman will be remembered in history that has made us open our eyes to the harsh realities in government. In fact, she will be a hero to others.
But, let us all ponder before making this woman a hero. In the recent past, looking at the turn of events, we have become a laughing stuff in the international community. The people had forgotten what two families had done to the country. The Marcoses and the Estrada have placed the country in great shame during their reigns. Now, the heirs and the wife of Marcos are back in government. Erap and his sons are now back in position. What is the message that we are sending? What, soon we may have Napoles as our congresswoman, Senator or President? Better still why don’t we have her as our Budget secretary or maybe DSSD secretary?
Now, Bacolod wants to join the fun. The former city administration is now in the hot seat. They are given fifteen days to respond to the complaints done by a bidder for the furniture at the New Government Center (NGC). We will wait for this. Anyway, the graft watchdogs are now listening to the bidders and are asking the Leonardia administration to explain the high-priced furniture found inside the NGC. This is another expose where one could see that there is magic and “hocus pocus” in transactions done with government.
A friend of mine once requested me to sign a paper for him to qualify to bid with a certain company or was it a local government unit? If I remember correctly it was a bid for the automation of a certain building. He further told me that he had three papers proposals passed with three different names. I refused to sign such document for I knew that it would lead to something else. It was a good thing that he lost in the bidding. This only shows that there is what we call as “red tape” in the bidding process of government and even in big companies. Those who lose shall accept his or her defeat. It is not what you deliver that matters, rather it is whom you know in the company.
So, in this world of our there will always be scams but soon the scammers will become leaders and will continue to practice scams in this country. For the scammers, may you scamper!
St. Ezekiel Moreno, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, St. Pedro Calungsod, Blessed John Paul II, Monsignorii John Liu and John Su, and Sir Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
