Questions that Matter

TODAY, we hear of the news that the government forces had already used air strikes to reclaim Zamboanga City from the MNLF forces. The issue had shifted from the anomalous pork barrel to the Zambo conflict.

The think tanks and those involved in the scam have really made a way out from public scrutiny. The drama had changed channel that for the past weeks only a few news outfits had been talking about the scam but they talk more about the conflict.

A good friend of mine shared to me that the cause of the stand –off was nonsense. It all started when Misuari requested in one program that the MNLF flag be hoisted together with the Philippine flag. He did not request that the flag be over and above the national flag. All he asked for was for his flag to be hoisted. The patriotic government officials denied the request and this angered Misuari and his group. Thus, the stand-off began.

In fact, according to one, this was part of the agreement made by MNLF and GRP in the past. This agreement was respected by many of the local government officials in the Regions. There was relative peace between the forces at that time.

Wars are caused by useless causes. Remember the wars fought in the Philippines. They all started from a stupendous reason and reasoning of leaders. The Filipino -- American battle started when a Filipino mestizo accidentally shot an American soldier. It was a mistake of fact and was not intentional. Many wars come out of pride also. Worst, many wars are products of economic profits.

The case of the 1991 Middle East conflict. America had interests on the oil fields and had to protect their interests over Kuwait. They send their youngsters to die for their businesses. What a pity. The Vietnam war was only to sell arms in Asia and to sow fear among Asian countries.

While young people die, they earn money. The World War II was a business venture of the Allied and Axis powers. Japan was to invade countries while Allied powers were to sell and help Asian countries. However, the conflict went out of hand and exploded into a world war.

Today, take a look at what is happening in Syria and the countries near it. The conflict is an isolated one. It is a civil war but why does US and UN intervene? There is something deeper. It might be economic. America and Europe had been suffering from economic depression for years. They need war to feed their economies. A good start would be the Middle east. Now, America is hooked on their TV screens aas to the decision of the Congress for a war with Syria. However, it was a good thing that Russia came into the middle and asked to soften the sanctions and respect the rights of the Syrian people. Thus, the conflict seems to have died down a little.

Back to our beloved country, while US and the rest of the world seems to loosen their “concern” with Syria. Here we are covering–up the stupidity of our government officials and their middle men by creating an artificial war in Mindanao. Now, here is the reality. The government can no longer control the situation. Here is the “big brother” coming in to sell its craft for a total war in Mindanao. The footages one could see in the air strike is a signal to the whole world that Aquino is still in control of the situation. But let us remember that every bullet and bomb that is used is the peoples’ money. This is a very expensive cover-up.

I challenge this government that they have to face the issue and not to create more conflicts.

My congratulations to Bishop Gerard Alminaza, D.D. for his appointment as the new Bishop of the Diocese of San Carlos. He is the 1st UNO-R alumnus to be raised to the Order of Bishops. He was also my professor in many Philosophy subject at Sacred Heart Seminary. My prayers for you dear Bishop.

St. Ezekiel Moreno, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, St. Pedro Calungsod, Blessed John Paul II, Monsignorii John Liu and John Su, Sir Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
