Provincial Tourism Week Celebration-A A +A
As I See It
Thursday, September 19, 2013
SEPTEMBER is World Tourism Month. In 2012, the two national champions were here as identified by the Dept. of Tourism and the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP). Negros Occidental was champion in Tourism Week Celebration and Silay City was champion in Tourism Month Celebration (component city category).
This year, the Province of Negros Occidental will have its Tourism Week opening program on Sept. 23 at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall. Msgr. Guillermo Gaston will have a Thanksgiving Mass and it will be attended by all tourism officers and their staff. It will be followed by ‘Fiesta Turismo’ wherein all towns and cities will feature their native delicacies to be shared by all. Gov. Freddie Marañon through the Provincial Tourism Office is inviting all the mayors and the chairmen of the Committee on Tourism of all local councils to attend.
On Sept. 24, each LGU will be represented by a team composed of three members for the ‘Best Brochure-Making Challenge’. This is now the Age of Information Technology. The lay-out artists of the towns and cities will be promoting and marketing their tourism potentials through a world-class brochure. In the afternoon (2 p.m.), the police tour guides of towns and cities will take center stage to do tour guiding. This competition showcases the language fluency, the acting skill and the salesmanship of the policemen in marketing their LGUs as tour guides. The venue of two activities is the Provincial Capitol Social Hall.
The conference-workshop on tourism and water based on the Tourism Month Celebration theme ‘Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future’ will be held at Mambukal Resort in Murcia. The forum will tackle our concerns on the biodiversity of Negros Occidental. It is noted that after the sugar mills our river water is classified as type C. It means not swimmable. Our shoreline in Central Negros has very murky water. The native fishes found in our rivers contaminated by the dirt of our sugar mills are no longer there. This whole-day activity on Sept. 25 calls for a bloody discussion.
Tourism Quiz (Elementary Category) will be at 9 a.m. and Tourism Quiz (High School Category) will be at 2 p.m. Both are to be held at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall. Topics will be culled out from the cultural history of Negros Occidental and Western Visayas. It will also cover current events, festivals, food, attractions, tourism laws, and terms used in the tourism industry. The University of Negros Occidental is also sponsoring a pageant ‘Final Search for Binibini at Ginoong Turismo ng Negros Occidental at UNO-R Gym (4 p.m.)’. All these events will be on September 26.
‘See Negros Occidental’ District Tourism Fair Opening will be held at The District North Point in Talisay City. It will run from Sept. 27 up to Sept. 29 and the Tour Guiding Competition (College Category) will be held also in the same venue. On Sept. 28, there will be the ‘Launching of The Dream Portraiture Challenge and the Dream Destination Exhibit at Negros Weekend Farmers Market. This is being coordinated by Cristine Mansinares, the provincial tourism officer. This will be followed by ‘One Beat, One Life Drumbeating Showcase’.
In the afternoon, there will be Tourism Quiz (College Category) at The District North Point. The last day (Sept. 29) activities will still be at The District North Point. At 2 p.m., there will be the Tour Guiding Competition (High School Category) and the week-long event will have a closing ceremony and program featuring the ‘Provincial Tourism Excellence Awards’. The Award-Giving Body will give trophies to the Most Outstanding Tourism-Oriented LGU, Most Outstanding Tourism Officer, Most Outstanding Cultural Event and Most Outstanding Tourism Month Celebration.
We are inviting everyone to join the celebration. Tourism has been a part of our culture. This is the industry of the now generation. This is an important part of the NEGROS FIRST Program. This is it!
