Editorial: Accurately, Responsibly-A A +A

AT LONG last, policemen in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, will have their own guns to use to respond to crime incidents and other purposes for which the firearms are intended.
Lucky for cops in Victorias City to have first received the guns from no less than Philippine National Police Western Visayas director, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. Their counterparts at the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office will be expected to follow suit, until maybe all cops in the province and in key cities shall have their guns, not personally acquired by them, but from those officially issued by the government, through the PNP.
There is no real quarrel about the issuance of firearms. It is long overdue altogether and after all.
The issue, however, would be as the efficacy on which the issued guns will be put to use.
In this light, officials of the Victorias local government were right in challenging the policemen to do their best using their issued guns.
This is not only in the aspect of marksmanship as policemen are expected to excel, but more so, in the aspect of the proper use for these guns.
With the rate of human rights abuses involving some policemen, recipient policemen must and should use their given guns, both accurately, and with more reason, responsibly.
