Rains, Floods and Many More?-A A +A
Questions that Matter
Tuesday, October 8, 2013
WHILE we were enjoying our Sunday obligations with our families here in Bacolod under the sun which was playing hide-and–seek, heavy rains were pouring in Negros Oriental and flooding most of the waterways. In the afternoon, the waters and rains were in the southern portion of the Negros Occidental. Soon, news came in that most of the southern towns were flooding. Why are we experiencing all these now? What I happening to our Mother Earth?
Many modern-day soothsayers are saying that these are the signs that the “end” is near. The world will soon end. Fundamentalists interpret these as the “sign of the times”. Many also believe that the prophecy of Nostradamus is at hand. Ye, many failed to realize that this is a natural course and is a product of our own making. We have to dispel morbid ideas and we must sit and work together for the wellness of our planet and its inhabitants.
There was once a good environmentalist who visited and gave a talk to university students on the state of the planet. He had a very good discussion of the “El nino and the La nina” phenomenon plus the “depletion of the Ozone layer” effect and the Global warming results to Climate change. He likened these events to a person. To be honest, it was only after his talk that everything became clear to me. Allow me to share his thoughts. He started by relating that we have closed most of the outlets in our house and thus the air inside will build pressure inside the house and would later look for outlets. Once it has found an outlet it will continue to release pressure as the outlet will become bigger. This is the green house effect and the hole in the ozone layer. Soon, hot air goes up because it is lighter than cold air and the inhabitants shall feel cold inside the house but evaporation and condensation build up and the people inside the house need blanket to protect themselves from the cold. Thus a blanket is made to warn the people. The effect of having the blanket is the El nino, where most parts of the planet experience very dry spell. The heat will cause the bodies inside the house to sweat and more evaporation happens. After a very hot season, the earth will sweat so much that the La Nina comes in. This is a phenomenon where there is a lot of excess water being poured into the earth. Thus massive flooding and rains, typhoons and storms are felt. Thus, we now experience these as a result of our environmental abuse.
No, what can we do? Do we still have the time to change climate change? The answer depends upon each one of us in the planet. What environmentalists are doing for the past decades are not enough to revert the realities? Environmental organizations have exhausted all means to warn us of these phenomena. We have not heard of these in the past years. Now, we feel the effect of what we had done to our Mother earth. We still have the time but we have to have a united stand on the protection of the Mother earth.
First, we have to make sure that we clean our environment. We have to discipline ourselves in the use of synthetic things. We have to stop using plastic and stop all industries that destroy the environment. We have to live naturally and dispel all unnatural things. In short everyone should be contented of simple lives and not the lifestyle that we are in today. We have sacrificed mush only for a little comfort. We have to sacrifice comfort and luxury for the future generation. But, who is ready to give up these things? Who wants to be primitive?
I guess if we continue the life we have today, we will not have a decade more to continue. We choose our ending, God writes it for us. May God bless us all.
Sts. Ezekiel Moreno, Lorenzo Ruiz, and Pedro Calungsod; Blessed John Paul II; Monsignorii John Liu and Su; and Mr. Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
Belated Birthday greetings to Mr. Tony Gargarita of UNO-R.
