Questions that Matter

THERE was once an oriental story of a barber and a beggar. The beggar went to the barber to have his haircut. The barber upon seeing the beggar immediately did his services to the beggar. The barber instead of asking for pay gave the beggar a sum of money. The beggar told himself that he would later repay the services and kindness of the barber. The beggar, upon reaching the town, was given by a merchant a pocketful of gold. The beggar immediately jumped off for the barbershop to repay the kind barber. He gave the gold to the barber and the barber was angry. He told the beggar, “You do not have to pay a service that is done out of charity.”

Today, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Here we are reminded of the humble Saint Juan Diego in facing the skeptics and telling them of the apparition of the Blessed Mother in the hill. He was not believed by them until she presented to them roses during winter.

December 8 was the feast of the Immaculate Conception and we celebrated it on the 9th for the 8th happens to be Advent Sunday. Taking the cue from our Blessed Mother, humility and obedience are two virtues that all of us must possess in these times of crises. The Blessed Mother with all humility stayed at the backstage during her lifetime. After the death of her Son, she proceeded with her life in deep humility. If this would have happened to us, wherein our son would become one popular star or politician, what will we do?

I am reminded of an occasion wherein the mother was so proud of the achievements of her son. It was as if she had the achievement. We should learn from the example of the Blessed Virgin. The Blessed Virgin had been so engrossed with humility that she had remained what she was for all her life.

The virtue of obedience is another which should be emulated from the Blessed Mother. She obeys without hesitation. She trusts in God. Her trust and obedience to the will of the Father had brought her nowhere but to be the carrier of the savior of the world. She accepted the will of God for her life. She is the perfect example of the virtue of obedience.

Today, I am wondering if we still possess these virtues. Vices, we all have them but virtues, I doubt. The issues around us today point to our lack of obedience and humility. In the national scene, the senators have great admiration for pride but less liking for humility. They are sending us the wrong signals and telling us that pride is far off better than humility.

The president of the republic should also take care of the common welfare of the people. He should, with all humility, get down and accept the fact that he can no longer be on top of the situation of the country. The big oil companies keep on dictating him and his little pets. They have taken the consciousness of the big wigs in Malacañang. They dictate the price to the ceiling, causing crises among the people. Shall we allow this to continue? Cannot we do anything? Shall we allow this to happen?

Happy fiesta to the members of the Christian community of Valladolid, the feast of our lady of Guadalupe.

St. Ezekiel Moreno, St.Lorenzo Ruiz and Pedro Calungsod, Blessed John Paul II, Monsignorii John Liu and John Su, and Sir Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
