As I See It

Thursday, February 13, 2014

V-DAY is a day set aside every February 14 to remind scientists and astronomers that it isn’t the moon, the sun, or gravity that makes the world go round but love.

What is love? It is a violent biological and emotional disturbance in which a person who is minding his or her own business suddenly goes gaga over another person the moment he or she comes into view.

For the sake of Valentine’s Day, we can always give you the types of love as I see them: agape, courtly, erotic, familial, free, ludos, mania, filial, platonic, pragma, puppy, religious, romantic, storge, tough, unconditional, and unrequited. (You can always disagree with me.) Love could always be followed with kisses: air, angel, butterfly, candy, continental, cordial, cup-like, electric, Eskimo, French, hickey, hot or cold, death (as performed by Italian mob member), snake (just like French kiss), tickle, or underwater.

Cupid plays a vital role upon lovers. He doesn’t care if one gets pregnant. Stupid Cupid is the god of erotic love who in Western art is portrayed as a mischievous boy or young man with wings and quiver who shoots arrows into the hearts of mortals. You should know that his gold-tipped arrows are for love and his lead-tipped arrows are for hate. He can always miss. Instead of hitting hearts, the arrows sometimes land on baloobas.

Banana split is good for sweethearts. It is a mystic malt shop dessert shared by wholesome lovers that’s made with bananas, ice cream, and nuts, then topped with a cherry. On VD, married couples may review “Ananga Ranga,” an Indian love manual which advocates sexual variety to keep a relationship alive. It is translated into English by Sir Richard Francis Burton.

Lovers become more passionate on Valentine’s Day. Passion here becomes a red-hot sexual fire that starts in the ID, and if not extinguished, can consume a virtual Independence Day fireworks display of emotions and feelings such as jealousy, paranoia, disgust, remorse, and obsession, before cooling. It’s true we don’t know what we’ve got until it’s gone, but we know what we’ve been missing until it arrives. You don’t love a woman (man also) because she is beautiful. She is beautiful because you love her.

Some couples suffer from sexual Alcatraz. It is a marriage or relationship in which a man or a woman feels sexually unsatisfied but can’t do anything about it. A love doctor may say that one of you or both of you lack serotonin. Couples (to prove my point) can always check their “O checklist” after having a lavender bath. Young lovers should always have ecology in mind after outdoor dating. Ecology is the branch of biology that teaches one to be a better custodian of one’s planet by cleaning up after a romantic picnic.

Old couples resort to aphrodisiac. It is a food, beverage or other digestible agent that is thought to arouse sexual desire or increase fertility and that historically has included almond, anise, araguda, asparagus, bananas, basil, carrots, chocolate, eggs, green mustard, pistachios, seafood, including shellfish and caviar. I hope you don’t have anterograde amnesia.

Heart is the symbol of love. It is the body’s most vital organ for survival that its owners are always giving away despite the likelihood of it being broken, discarded, and not returned in the same condition.

Giving away one’s heart is coupled with “I love you”, an expression that exists in every language but doesn’t need to be spoken, to be communicated. “Iniibig kita” (Filipino), “Je t’aime” (French), “Ya tebya lyublyu” (Russian), “Wo ai ni” (Mandarin).

On Valentine’s Day, a man may make a public proposal. It is a popular trend in which a man, thinking he’s being imaginative or original, surprises a woman while he’s on live TV by falling to his knees, pulling out a ring and asking her to marry him. In return she will show proper acting, “Omigod!” That will always have a pussycat ending.

Love is great! Love can remove fears. Love can remove doubts. Love can remove worries, and love can even remove what should not be removed. Keep on loving lovers. Just be careful!
