C. NEIL Strait said that happiness is what millions seek. The tragedy is that they seek it in things, positions, and places. True happiness is found in doing a job well, knowing there is a purpose in its doing, and in seeking other’s benefit from its accomplishment. Are you happy? Let’s try to find out.

All tourism officers in Negros Occidental are given the opportunity to attend a two-day seminar-workshop on “Happiness at Work.” We all know what work is. Every company (including local government units) has a policy of “no work, no pay.” For a regular government employee, his 15-day salary may not even be enough for his basic needs. Heads of offices may have savings but he or she cannot be rich. (Those who involve themselves in scams do not mind their salary. They just prepare themselves for hell after life. There is no happiness there.)

The “Happiness at Work” seminar-workshop was sponsored by the Province of Negros Occidental in coordination with i-CLD Consulting Inc. Our lead facilitator is Carmen Leonor “Mitch” Diokno. To be happy, work should be treated as a game not a burden, not a problem. A game is a system in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that remits in quantifiable outcome. A game should be considered as a form of art in which participants, termed as players, make decisions in order to manage resources through game tokens in the pursuit of goal.

Happier employees are more productive. Study shows that happier employees are more engaged, more motivated, give better customer service, play more effective roles in teams and make better leaders. (Our public officials should first become happy employees so that they can effectively lead.)

Happier employees are healthier employees. Happiness and health are interconnected. Happier employees are less likely to get sick and if they do get ill, they recover quicker. All in all, they show up in work more, are more present when they are there, and have more energy in life.

What does happiness mean for you? What makes you happy at work? Please give specific examples. (Please, be honest in giving the answers.) There are things to be considered when we are at work: activities, skills, techniques. Consciously or unconsciously we use our tools like thought process, attitudes emotional process, body sensations, paradigms, assumptions and personal truth, strong belief and we even have context for everything. (Wow, heavy!)

In our work, the different processes and actions together with our mindset arise and produce results. This mindset is a framework of assumptions. We can do a little introspection. We go down to ourselves and ask some questions. Recall a time when you felt most fulfilled as an employee. (What happened? When did this happen? Where did this happen? Why did this happen? How did this happen?)

What do you value most today as an employee? Cite an incident where this value became more evident. What happened? When? Who? Why? How? What one thing would you like to see in your office (LGU) a year from now? Can you illustrate mentally?

Who we are would always depend on our pessimism or optimism. Are you a pessimist or an optimist? Pessimism is a feeling or belief that bad things will happen in the future. It could even be a feeling or belief that what you hope for will not happen. It is an inclination to emphasize adverse aspect, conditions, and possibilities or to expect the worst possible outcome.

Optimism, on the other hand, is a feeling or belief that good things will happen in the future: what you hope for will happen. It is an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon action and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome. List down all pessimistic thoughts about your work, the community you serve, your office, and others.

How do you feel when you are thinking these thoughts? Are you angry, happy, sad, worried etc.? How do these pessimistic thoughts affect the way you work and your relationship with people (community, your peers, family)? What kind of results do you produce when you are pessimistic? Give specific examples. What do you think keeps you pessimistic?
Everything is in our mindset. Can we shift one’s mindset? Yes, it can be done.
