Paralympics 2010 opens

PERSONS with Disabilities (PWDs) of Bacolod City joined the Paralympics 2010 which kicked off Wednesday at the University of St. La Salle covered court.

The event aims to identify athletes to vie for national and international sports competition for PWDs. It will also enhance public awareness; develop friendship and camaraderie among athletes with disabilities.

The disciplines lined-up are swimming for the visually impaired, hearing impaired, and physically & intellectually disabled.

Special events are chess and volleyball for the blind, sitting volleyball for the orthopedically handicapped, mix volleyball for the hearing impaired, bocce for the mentally retarded, target roll, and ball throw for the autistic.

The athletes came from the Bacolod City SPED Center, BCNHS SPED Center, Association of Disabled Persons, Deaf Association of Bacolod, and VISION, Inc.

The one-day event is annually held in celebration of the 32nd National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week from July 17-23, 2010 with a theme "Sa Istructurang Accessible, Lahat ay Able."
