Slain Briton's son dismisses 'robbery' motive

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

JAMES Nicholas, the 28-year-old son of slain British national Anthony Nicholas, did not believe that robbery was the motive behind the killing of his father last Monday.

James believed there is a deeper motive behind the brutal slay of his defenseless father. He said it could involve land dispute but the young Nicholas declined to elaborate.

He argued that if robbery was the motive for killing, then the suspects would have also killed his mother and helper.

Judith Grijaldo Nicholas, the victim's wife, narrated that they were on their way home after collecting cash from their businesses: Hi Joe variety store at the city public market, Matlag Town House at Camp Quino in Barangay 5, and Hi Joe Beach Resort.

The victim was driving their service vehicle, a tricycle, and as they neared their farmhouse, two unidentified suspects waved at them and immediately fired at her husband, said Judith.

Anthony suffered a fatal wound in the head and several wounds in his thigh and back.

Judith said after the shooting, the suspects demanded for her mobile phone but because she had a hard time pulling out the phone from her bag, she instructed her helper to surrender all the about P20,000 cash collection instead.

The suspects fled upon hearing the sound of an approaching tricycle, Judith said, adding she and her helper cannot recall the faces of the suspects because of shock and fear.

Anthony and Judith got married in 1978 and lived in Sipalay since then, except for some short trips visit in London. The couple has three children: Anjo, 30, a revenue officer in the United Kingdom, Joann, 26, and James, a publisher of the online game "Hello Kitty."

James was in Sipalay for a visit when the killing happened. His siblings will be coming this week to pay their respects to their father, who was known in the community as a very helpful man.

Judith said her husband will be cremated and the ashes will be scattered in Hi Joe Beach Resort in Sipalay, a place that Anthony loved very much. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
