GERMANY scored its fourth World Cup title via a late one-nil escape from Argentina on Monday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It marked the first time a European team won in South American soil.

But Mario Goetze was left open minutes before end of the second extra time to lift the Germans for the crown. Both sides played excellent football which ended in a scoreless draw in regulation as well as in the first half of the extension period.

Tourist arrivals up 29% due to sports

BACOLOD City Mayor Monico Puentevella, in his State of the City Address, said the staging of major sporting events in Bacolod City since he assumed office last year has contributed to the increase in the city’s tourist arrivals, which grew approximately 29 percent by the end of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.

Bacolod, considered the second home of the Philippine Azkals, played host to the 2nd Philippine Peace Cup in Panaad Park and Stadium in October last year where the national team defended its title against Chinese Taipei and Pakistan.
