THE Negros Occidental secondary girls’ basketball team is set to defend its home court when the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet kicks off on March 12 -16, 2012 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan in Bacolod City.
This was confirmed yesterday by team Head Coach Ericson Rios.

The Negrense squad is composed of standouts from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) which include Christine Marie Aliermo (C), Clarice Agape Aujero (F), Johana Lyn Divinagracia (F), Camille Jan Panisa (G), Rizza Mariz Cenabre (G), Antonielle Kaye Berduque (G); ST. Joseph School-La Salle’s Trixie Marie Antiquiera (G) and Lyn Heart Berina (F); St. John’s Institute’s Kristine Gabrielle De Asis (C), Mansilingan Christian Academy’s Deanna Faith Ang (G), Ramon Torres National High School’s Melchar Jerez (F) and Aguisan National High School’s Jonalyn Ramos (F).
Rios, the Sports Director of the UNO-R, said that though they haven’t scouted their regional rivals, they are confident that they can defend their ground.
“We don’t have the standards in which to measure the strength of our team. But we have a balanced lineup, offensively and defensively. We have a solid interior with Aliermo and de Asis at center and the two out-of-towners at the power forward. Likewise, we have two good open-court players in Trixie Marie Antiquiera and Clarice Agape Aujero and at least 5 shooters who can hit from the rainbow territory,” Rios added.
And since it was in 2004 when the event was last played, Rios and his team had a couple of tune-up matches to ensure the competitiveness of his squad.
Among those games that the Negros Team played were against the team of former two-time UAAP MVP Marichu Bacaro and the University of St. La Salle College of Nursing team.
Bacaro is a 5’2” pointguard from USLS who played for Ever Bilena-University of Sto. Tomas, where she led the UST Tigresses to the 2006 UAAP title.
