JSY Transport, USLS Nhojs lead semis cast in Tan Kek Pin Cup

JSY Transport routed an undermanned Talisay City 94-65 while University of St. La Salle Nhojs outlasted University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Polvora’s Law Office 94-84 at the close of the elimination round of the Class A of the 12th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at TTHS Po Hang Gym.

JSY Transport and USLS tied at 4-1 to advance to the semifinals. JSY ended as the top seed by virtue of the winner over the other rule.

The quarterfinals will be played on Friday with No.3 Talisay City, armed with a twice to beat advantage, going up against No. 6 Fil-Sino Thunderbirds at 7 p.m., followed by the knockout match between No. 4 Rogers - Province of Negros Occidental and No. 5 UNO-R Polvora’s Law office.

Talisay City, which showed up with only 7 players, kept pace with JSY 25-21 in the opening quarter but the next two quarters was a different story as Talisay can only manage a total of 27 points while JSY scored two 26-points quarter to post a commanding 77-48 advantage going to the last 12 minutes of the game.

All 14 players fielded by Coach Arvin Gustilo scored for JSY led by Jobert Pastias with 14 points, Ely Olarte 12, Vengie Vergara 11, Pipo Javelona 10, Michael Macon and Rolly Jaca with 7 points each.

Sonny Abaring and Joemel Garrido paced Talisay with 15 points apiece, Jehu Ayagan shot 12 and Rudcel Nonato had 9 points.

UNO-R’s sluggish start served as cushion for the USLS victory. USLS took the opening quarter 24-7, even as Polvora outscored Nhojs in the next two quarters but fell short, as USLS was able recover its bearings in the last quarter to equal the output of UNO-R.

Scott Salvacion, Arturo Cuaresma and Kevin Villafranca finished with 15 points each for NHOJS while Allen Delagente and Gonzales scored 8 points apiece.

Joemel Paderog led Polvora with 27 points, backstopped by Richer Santillan’s 10 and Kim Dimaranan’s 7 points.

Rogers - Province of Negros Occidental ended the elimination round at 3-2 by defeating Fil-Sino Thunderbirds 96-79.

Rodel Canino spearheaded Rogers with 20 points, Hermie Derwill added 19, Mark Linaja delivered 15 while Bobby Cepeda made 12 points.

Thunderbirds was led by Robbie Jalando-on with 23 points, Carl John Oquindo picked up 16 point while Richard Caberte delivered 14 points. (Stephen Tan)
