Petron upset undermanned Phoenix

No. 7 Petron 2001/02/12 upset No. 2 Phoenix 199/2k 79-66 in the quarterfinals clash of the 5th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John Liu Activities Center.
On the other game, top seed Ceres Pasalubong 2006/07’s strong second half performance carried them over No. 8 Legends/2009 90-77.
Phoenix was in the lead in the opening quarter 25-17, buoyed by a balanced offensive led by Paolo Li’s 10 points against the 15-points combined output of Joshua Co and Johann Villanueva.
Phoenix was still on top with 2 minutes left in the 2nd quarter 38-34, but Petron grabbed the lead at halftime 41-38 on a 7-0 closing quarter run. Robert Genovea scored 10 points and Marcelino Tan added 8 points for Petron in the quarter.
Petron unleashed a crippling 18-2 run for the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter, as Jan Michael Young scattered 7 straight points and Martin Ballesteros also strung up 5 straight points.
Phoenix also played with a one-player disadvantage for 3 minutes, as John Lee fouled out with 8:07 left in the 3rd quarter.
A 10 minute power outage halted play for 10 minutes, with Petron keeping a 63-44 lead 3:56 left in the quarter.
When play resumed, Phoenix surged to a 9-2 run, closing the gap at 65-53.
In the 4th quarter, Petron was able to recover their bearing and extended the lead anew at 74-57 on a Ralph Ong follow-up with 5:35 left.
Phoenix threatened anew, as Jan Jan Lopue made 5 straight points and Bogs
Ongsingco’s putback cut the lead to 74-66 with 2 minutes left. But this proves to be the last point for Phoenix, as Marcelino Tan canned 3 of 4 free throws and Ralph Ong’s lay-up sealed a rubber match on October 6, Saturday at 745 pm.
Tan paced Petron with 16 points, Joshua Co added 13 points, Ralph Ong made 11 points and Ballesteros had 8 points.
Phoenix was led by Li with 14 points, Ongsingco picked up 11 points, Mark Jimenez made 8 points and Jan Jan Lopue had 7 points.
In the second game, Ceres Pasalubong was expected to cruise past an undermanned Legends/2009 which played with only 7 players.
Martin Jalandoni scored 9 points and Alvin Dionela canned 2 treys for 8 points to give Ceres a 26-18 opening quarter lead.
The Legends/2009 surprised Ceres, as they grabbed the lead at the half 44-43 behind the penetration and outside shooting of Kevin Daniel Ramos and Aljon Diolaso who made 11 points each.
Ramos continued to shine with 9 points but lacked the scoring support against Renz Mendoza and Bren Tajonera spearheading a Ceres comeback with 11 and 7 points, respectively to erect a 70-57 lead going to the 4th quarter.
A balanced offensive from Ceres by Brian Coo and Leif Ledesma countered another sizzling quarter from Ramos, as they moved to a semifinals encounter with Shakey’s/New Energy Mktg. on Tuesday.
Mendoza finished with 13 points, Brian Coo and Dionela shot 12 points each, Jalandoni had 9 points, Bryan Victor Javelosa and Ledesma delivered 8 points each and Tajonera contributed 7 points.
Ramos topscored with 34 pts in a losing effort, backstopped by Diolaso with 21 points, Omay Demonteverde 9 points and Richie Ang 6 points. (Stephen Tan)
