Davies subdue Willtrade, USLS post 5th win

DAVIES Philippines-University of Negros Occidental Recoletos- A survived Willtrade Sagay Central 72-68 while University of St. La Salle keep its undefeated streak in 5 games prevailing over UNO-R B 91-70 during the games played last Sunday in Class A of the 13th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at TTHS Po Hang Gym.
New Negros Coliseum defaulted its match, handing Toyota Motors its first victory.
Willtrade almost pulled out a come-from-behind victory against UNO-R A. Willtrade overcame a 54-45 3rd quarter deficit and caught up with Davies at 57-all on an Arnold Gono layup halfway in the 4th quarter.
Rodel Canino and Cedric Eslabon gave UNO-R some breathing room for a 65-59 advantage but a 3-pointer from Jeff Jacinto and a back-to-back trey from Joemarie Bayhon pushed Sagay Central on top 68-67 with 1:03 left.
Willtrade had the chance to extend the lead but Jacinto missed his 2 free throws and Canino sunk a 15-foot jumper to give the lead back to Davies.
Bayhon attempted a contested triple that was rebounded by Ramos who was fouled and made 2 free throws for a 3-point lead with 15 ticks left.
After a timeout by Willtrade Coach Rey Pandoro, Jeff Jacinto received the inbound pass but forced an ill-advised 27-feet trey that bounced off the rim and sealed the outcome of the contest.
With 11 players scoring in the first half led by Jade Paul Calma’s 3 treys, UNO-R A had a 41-30 advantage. Willtrade got their offense from Ryan Maningo scoring 5 points and 6 players with 4 points each.
In a low scoring quarter, Willtrade finally outscored Rams 15-13 to cut the deficit to 9 points going to the 4th quarter.
Canino spearheaded the Davies offense with 16 points, Ramos delivered 10 points, Francis Parreño shot 8 points while Coleen Testa and John Lorenz Toral made 4 points each.
Willtrade got their production from Bayhon with 15 points, Jacinto and Gono finished with 11 points each, Maningo shot 10 points while Ramer Javillo and Virgiliio Dapar contributed 8 points apiece.
UNO-R B surprised USLS with a 30-28 opening quarter lead, bannered by Crispin Oquindo’s 12 points and Allan Olac’s 7 points against USLS Darryl Endona and Nike Montalvo’s 9 points apiece.
President’s Gym turned it up in the next 3 quarters, as it steadily built its lead at the break 47-38 and extended it to 72-55 in the 3rd quarter.
Montalvo fired 16 points, Janus Calma and Mark De la Cruz who were scoreless in the 1st quarter finished with 16 points and 14 points, respectively, while Kevin Villafranca scored 10 points.
Oquindo paced UNO-R with 14 points, Olac and John Buenaflor made 13 points each, Mark Papa made 10 points and Raymar Oblido had nine points.
