IT WAS the day for reserves as the second and third stringers started and ended the championship match of University of St. La Salle Green and Black aspirant teams for the Condura Cup of Basketball Coaches Association of Negros "D" League on Saturday at West Negros University gym.
The Green Stingers won 77-71 in the anticlimactic finale turned into a tune-up game as Coaches Peewee Demonteverde and Arland Blanco sent in the relievers at tipoff to the delight of the starting five and their supporters.
It worked for the Blacks which surged ahead 21-8 in the first quarter. Greenies Andrei Dadivas, Astro Vista and Rafa Tolosa, however, worked to recover lost ground and combined with Reggie Alinsoring and Lawrence Cabalfin to take the half, 38-37.
Guard Tyrel Nifras, back and cramps-free, compensated for his early exit against SJI in the semis and scored 8 fastbreak points to get the lead back, 63-62 at the end of the third. It was shortlived as Vista, voted MVP after the game, drove the lane, hit a triple to give Green a 67-65 advantage.
With 5:06 left, the reserves returned to action with the Blacks at one time missing eight putback attempts. Ken Verzano scored under and Kian Tecson hit on a drive for its last points while Green minimized its errors and played safe until the buzzer.
Vista topscored with 15 points and Dadivas added 13 for Green. Tecson has 13, Nifras 10, Lance Jomalesa and Clyde Gadayan combined for 16 for Black.
Chosen along with Vista in the mythical team were Don Lim of St. John's Institute, Jaycee Adjei of West Negros University, Nifras and Jason Biaco of USLS-Black. (HGD)
