UNIGAMES ahead-A A +A
Thursday, August 29, 2013
THE 18th Filoil UNIGAMES (Philippine University Games) is set October 20 to 28 with University of St. La Salle (USLS) as the main venue and a sprinkle of sports arenas surrounding the campus at Capitol Subdivision here in Bacolod City.
Men and women athletes from all over the country will converge and compete for excellence in 13 events. The menu, as provided by organizer Roger Banzuela, are athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, karatedo, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, tae kwan do, volleyball and beach volleyball.
The last two events (for those who still do not know) are the forte of Coach Roger, having been a national standout as player, coach and consultant of the sport.
Why the schedule and eligibility requirement got out first? It was too early for SCOOPers to get a 2-page advancer last week during the memorandum of agreement signing of Seaoil's Adopt a Mangrove project at the Pavillion Hotel at Reclamation Area.
It looked like UNIGAMES will be staged ahead of the NOPSSCEA season scheduled for September 13.
Credit it to the Roger and UNIGAMES organizer for a timely info. While UNIGAMES inform ahead, local sportswriters from SCOOP-Bacolod has to hear or get a copy of the NOPSSCEA program of activities.
For now, teams playing in the inter-schools meet have an idea and will not be surprised if NOPSSCEA try to speed up its schedule in order to join UNIGAMES in time.
To fans of collegiate games, take note that basketball (at USLS Coliseum, BTTHS gym and WNU gym) will be on October 22 to 28, same with football (USLS, Panaad Stadium, Paglaum, Talisay North Point-LRY FB Field) and volleyball (USLS covered courts and NOMPAC).
Athletics followers will have a chance to see the best of the best in track and field on October 24 to 26 at USLS Track Oval and Panaad Stadium.
Badminton will be played at Pohang Badminton Court from October 23 to 26; chess from Oct. 22 to 24 at USLS College Library and karatedo at Riverside College covered court on Oct. 23 & 24 after the weigh-in on the 22nd.
Lawn tennis is set October 22 to 26 at USLS LT hard court); sepak takraw at UNO-R covered court from Oct. 23 to 26; swimming at USLS pool Oct 25 & 26; table tennis at USLS Santuario de La Salle on Oct. 24 to 27.
Tae kwon do lovers will enjoy at Riverside College on October 25 and 26 and beach volleyball on October 27 & 28 at USLS Sand Court.
With all these events featuring sweating bodies all over the court, UNIGAMES will serve as a respite from the madding crowd of the Masskara Festival. For those looking for dripping bodies, just go to the 25-meter USLS swimming pool.
Nice view up there.
