THE national women's basketball team, popularly known as Discovery-Perlas Pilipinas, is planning to return here in Bacolod and conduct a series of basketball clinics with the Junior WNBA.
Head coach Haydee Ong disclosed this information last week.
The Discovery Perlas first came to the city two years ago for the inaugural 1st Philippine Sports Commission-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Discovery Women's Invitational Cup held at the West Negros University gym. Thailand, Qatar and China were hosted by the Philippines.
Ong said they find the city to have great potential in women's basketball. It can be recalled that the squad initiated several campus tours and met a number of young cagebelles who were very interested in this sports.
This clinic is to further widen public awareness to this sports discipline as well as share the basic fundamental training to those aspiring cagebelles, she added.
Discovery-Perlas Pilipinas, meanwhile, has successfully defended its title in the 2nd Discovery Women's Basketball Invitational/Jesse Robredo Memorial Cup held last August 22-25 in Naga City.
The tournament, participated by Australia, Singapore and host-team, was part of Perlas Pilipinas' preparation for the upcoming FIBA Asia Women's Basketball Championship in October.
Ong has no comment when asked on the status of the application for naturalization of 6'3 center Zheng Xiaojing, the 27-year-old Chinese who has been in the Philippines since 2010 and has been joining the national team's camps.
Zheng was quoted that it's her personal decision to become a naturalized-Filipino. "I hope they [Congress] approve my application. I love the Philippines and I love the Filipino people. I hope one day, I will also be a Filipino," she said.
Zheng can speak and understand few Filipino words and amazingly can sing and understand the Philippine national anthem. (HGD)
