Twin Tournament champions-A A +A
Monday, September 23, 2013
THE impossible dream of becoming a twin champion did not take long.
The Baby and Junior Stingers of University of St. La Salle never allowed St. John's Institute and Bacolod Tay Tung High School to spoil their fun and double celebration on Saturday at Po Hang gym.
The younger La Sallians flew higher than the Baby Falcons, 55-53 in the Small Basketeers of the Philippines division while their older brothers grounded the Thunderbolts at their homecourt, 84-80 for the Milo BEST passerelle title.
Hua Ming failed to recover and showed their weakness when trailing a more superior adversary. The Johnians have many chances of turning the table in the SBP but came up short, fumbling and creating turnover one after the other.
Tay Tung, on the other hand, was on top 18-16 as SJ Belangel singlehandidly forced his way in the first quarter. Guard Jester Sangco and forward Christian Marie Palacios gave the Thunderbolts a 43-33 lead at half, the latter hitting three successive triples on the same spot and scoring with drives and followups.
A perfect third quarter combination of Nifras-Jomalesa-Vista-Rivera unleashed by Coach Peewee Demonteverde worked wonders and shocked fellow La Sallians Tata and Sammy Belangel at BTTHS bench. The quartet left a stinging mark leaving a 20-point turnaround and a 63-53 advantage at the start of the fourth.
Poor free throw shooting hounded Tay Tung including Belangel who missed seven from the line while Rabor-Sobreviega-Oria-Vista hit crucial baskets and secured the win from the 15-foot line.
The loss gave Thunderbolts a net lesson in team work and its shallow lineup showed compared to La Salle who dominated the boards and earned second and third chance points on extra caroms.
As one Tay Tung parent commented "no one star could make a champion team. Even Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James need a worthy supporting cast".
A superstitious fan said" well, the color of Milo is green. It seems the hue of the day favors the green-shirts as the blue-uniformed Falcons and Thunderbolts were seeing green the whole time.
BEST founder Nic Jorge, awarded the trophies despite struggling with his roller-driven-seater- walker after planing in from Manila together with his Milo referees to finish the Bacolod leg finals with finesse and orderly fashion.
