EARLY favorite Sanyo lived up to its billing beating Panasonic, 79-78 on Monday as Sharp Cup intercolor of Basketball Unified Sports Group unreeled at JGC gym at Goldenfields Commercial Complex.
Wendell Fuentebella topscored with 23 points unloading 13 in the final half while Hermi Derwill added 15 hitting 11 at the opening quarter. Lanky Garry Garcia unloaded 13 to help thwart Panasonic's rally in the final half.
Former CSA-B Eagle Bandoy Aliermo dropped 16 points, Biboy Java scattered 14, Felipe Tumamot and Allan Antones hit 11 each and Jovito Yasay powered his way with 10 for a losing effort.
Despite trailing 32-40 at the break, Panasonic came back and made life difficult for Sanyo taking the passerelle quarters 13-12, 17-13 and 22-14 with Aliermo and Java pushing hard.
Sanyo recovered in time as bull-strong Matt Rayo, Edgar Basco and Sebastian Antones combined for 14 points to keep the Freezer Masters afloat and survived a scary win.
Tournament commissioner Bing Soyao expects close encounters every Monday and Wednesday as Huskies converted its one-hour practice sessions to one and a half hour of tournament to lure members back to the gym and maintain active membership.
Format is a double round elimination, crossover semis and a knockout final.
