DEFENDING champion West Negros University Mustangs survived a close game against University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams, 73-72, on Saturday in the second round of the Nopsscea collegiate basketball played at the WNU gym.
It was a thrilling match with several lead changes and ties until Coach Joebert Pastias’ ward fouled Jade Paul Calma of UNO-R on a 3-point attempt of with 2.7 ticks left. The former Mansilingan Christian Academy star missed his third attempt as the ball rimmed out. UNO-R tried an offensive put back but fell short as the time expired.
UNO-R opened a 22-16 run in the first quarter on Santillan and Calma’s 6 points while Villoria and Andrada kept the Mustangs’ offense rolling.
WNU exploded in the second quarter, 26-11 as the Rams committed errors losing the ball to pressure. The defending champions went to the dugout smiling with a 42-33 lead at the break.
The Rams erased those grin and changed it to frown as it surged to a 22-16 run of their own to bring the game closer towards the final canto, 58-55.
Andrada led the Mustangs with 21 points, Villoria added 16, Nermal with 9 points, Solomon 8 points, Segumpan 6, Lapore 4 as Veloso and Vizcarra contributed 2 points each.
Santillan and Calma anchored Rams with 14 points each, Paderog added 11, Parreno shot 9 points, Testa with 7 while Papa and Dimaranan with 6 points, dela Torre with 3 and Dayumat 2 points.
The WNU-USLS match on Sunday was reset to another day due to brownout with the Stingers high from a huge 94-79 triumph over the winless Visayan Maritime Academy-Global College on Saturday. (HGD)
