Lopsided scores mark the first day in men's basketball in the 18th Fil0il - UNIGAMES held simultaneously at West Negros University, Colegio San Agustin Bacolod and University of St. La Salle gyms here.
The closest game so far is College of St.Benilde's 78-71 triumph over College of La Purisima Concepcion at WNU gym. The Capiznons were ahead by 10 points early in the fourth but faltered at crunch time as the Blazers steadily inched closer.
Leading still by 3 at 71-68 with 2:56 left, CPC succumbed to pressure allowing former USLS Junior Stinger Gerald Castor to steal and score on a contested lay up. The wily point guard hit another jumper from the side for the lead, 72-71 with 1:15 remaining.
Stunned after a passing error resulted to Castor's first conversion, CPC never scored again despite having second and third chances and Blazer Young and Rodel Joven went 2-for-2 from the line. Ervin Justin Flores highlighted the final count with a breakaway as the Capiz lads simply crumpled instead of hacking an upset.
Other games saw CPSU beating Ateneo de Davao, 84-74, WNU Mustangs clipping USA Eagles of Iloilo, 77-65 at the former's lair.
Over at CSA-Bacolod gym, HERCOR 103 - SLU 65 ; USC 102 -FSUU 48; USLS 91 - HCDC 68; while at USLS Coliseum, UV 96 - UIC 47; CSA-B 66 - HAU 53; UNO-R 67 - Xavier 46.
Defending champion National University with center Alfred Aroga unleashed, demolished Foundation University of Dumaguete City, 101-48 as if to show other contenders that the Bulldogs are serious to retain the title.
