Province of Negros Occidental (PoNO) leaned on Joe Marie Bayhon's 21 points to bring home the title of the 1st LNA 7 Foundation-Basketball Coaches Association of Negros Inter-Employees Open tournament on Sunday at West Negros University gym.
The Capitol boys regrouped just in time to repulse Negros Panay (NePan) Sales Inc., 90-85 after building a 42-26 lead after two quarters. The Merchandisers came closer with a 19-10 surge at third, 45-52 behind a searing fastbreak every time PoNO misses.
Former UNO-R Rams’ Cagayao and Marlon Talatala backed up fellow UNO-Rian Bayhon with 12 and 11 points each while ex-USLS Stinger Peewee Demonteverde added 6 markers while manning the backcourt. Ex-CSA-B Eagle Rex Bayer provided the spunk and offense when needed at the paint to finish with 8 points.
NePan, with its untiring speed demons and powerful wingmen continued to hound the Capitol cagers underneath and succeeded with 4:30 left getting the upperhand at 79-76. PoNO called a timeout to stop NePan's momentum and planned for its next move.
The overjoyed Merchandisers were ecstatic and giving high fives instead of getting instructions from the bench. In the return play, Cagayao scored under, Bayhon followed with a drive and banked a shot before NePan bought a basket, 81-82.
Capitol's Boy Cuadra added another twinner on Demonteverde's assist with 2:18 ticks left and bull-strong Bayhon hit from a loose ball recovery, 86-83 PoNO up with 55 seconds remaining. Bert Celis followed up Peewee's try from the arc but missed a three-point play, 88-83.
NePan's point guard made 2 of 3 attempts from the charity stripe for its last basket and Cagayao made both penalty shots for the final count.
PoNO entered the finals after beating Macro on Sunday morning while NePan defeated USLS Faculty and Staff.
Meanwhile, BCAN's 35-Up Open, sponsored by PoNO and Provincial Tourism Department, will have its semifinal round on December 7 at WNU gym.
