BACOLOD’S pride Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, reigning WBO world light flyweight champion, and Merlito ‘Tiger” Sabillo, defending WBO minimum-weight titlist, once again proved that Bacolod is indeed the “City of Champions.”
Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. said, “What a way to open Christmas as they usher the spirit of hope and cheers to the Filipino people.”
Councilor El Cid Familiaran said that Nietes and Sabillo’s victory is the pride and honor of the city and the province.
“Let it be known to the whole world that there exist a City of Bacolod and province of Negros Occidental for purposes of tourism attraction. Both worked hard to follow the footsteps of boxing icon Manny Paquiao to gain fame, money and bring honor to the country,” Familiaran stressed.
Nietes was impressive with a third round TKO victory over Mexican challenger Sammy “Guty” Gutierrez during the Pinoy Pride XXIII: Filipinos Kontra Latinos held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday.
The victory also extended Nietes’ reign as division world champion, making him the second longest current Filipino world champion next to the great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.
Sabillo was able to keep his WBO minimum-weight belt against mandatory challenger Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua via split draw.
Judges scored the fight: Sabillo, 115-113; Buitrago, 115-113 while the other judge had it even, 114-114.
A heroes’ welcome awaits the two boxing champions when they return to Bacolod. (HGD)
