HOMEGROWN world boxing champions Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo were given tribute by the city government here led by Mayor Monico Puentevella on Thursday.

Nietes, scoring a third round technical knockout victory against Mexican challenger Sammy Gutierrez, defended his WBO light-flyweight belt in the main event of the Pride 23 last Dec. 30 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

In the co-main event, Sabillo settled for a draw against his undefeated opponent Luis Buitrago from Nicaragua to retain his minimumweight title.

Puentevella presented the Nietes and Sabillo in a press conference yesterday afternoon at the Ceremonial Hall of the Bacolod Government Center.

Both boxers received the Brilyante Awards plaques for their contribution to uplift the name of the city in the field of sports. They also received an incentive check of P10,000 each.

“We must be proud of them because they are true Bacolodnons,” Puentevella said as he told both champions to be role models, and to take care of themselves, and invest their profits wisely.

“The road to being a champion is very tough and it is the ultimate challenge to every boxer. They (Nietes and Sabillo) have realized their dreams and they are now moving forward,” the mayor said.

Although Puentevella was not able to watch their fight live because he has committed to join the Alay Lakad 2013 the following day, the boxers still thanked him for his support and for giving recognition to their achievements.

Moreover, the mayor expressed gratitude to ALA Gym founder Antonio “Bidoy” Aldeguer for producing world-class boxing talents, adding that he hopes the stable will produce more world champions.

Puentevella also requested Aldeguer to consider holding the fights of city’s four world champions in Bacolod.

The two others are WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight title holder Genesis “Azukal” Servania and unbeaten super flyweight “King” Arthur Villanueva. (NLG)
