Areas 9, 7 lead athletics medal haul-A A +A

INTERNATIONAL and Palarong Pambansa track and field campaigner Mary Anthony Diesto of Area 9-Negros Occidental High School (NOHS) and Antonette Aguillon of Area 7-Bacolod City ruled their respective events in the first day of athletics action in the 2013 Palarong Panlalawigan (Provincial Meet) at Panaad Stadium on Monday.
Area 9 and Area 7 are leading in the medals hauls in athletics with two and five gold medals, respectively, in all the divisions.
Sixteen-year-old Diesto, a senior at NOHS, dominated her favorite event – the secondary girl’s long jump with a leap of 5.24 meters – while improving her bronze medal finish of 5.15 meters in the last Palarong Pambansa. Ailyn Tumbali of Area 4, another Palaro veteran, settled for silver in 4.87 meters while Syra Serna of Area 6 took the bronze with 4.78 meters.
Diesto’s teammate Rocel Mae Pahilanga also won the secondary girl’s 110 hurdles, clocking 15.58 seconds over Kim Cyra Pedriña of Area 3 (17.19 seconds) and Arlyn Saul of Area 7 (18.05 seconds).
Palarong Pambansa veteran Louielyn Pamatian of Area 4 dominated the secondary girl’s 400 meters with a time of 59.57 seconds, ahead of another Palarong Pambansa campaigner Joycie Berano of Area 7 (1:00.37) and Kimberly Zulueta of Area 8-Nopsscea (1:03.4).
First-timer Aguillon, a Grade 5 pupil at Handumanan Elementary School, was teary eyed after winning the gold in elementary girl’s long jump with leap of 4.21 meters. Maycee Magdangal of Area 1 won the silver (4.20 meters) and Arianne Paules of Area 6 settled for bronze medal with 4.09 meters.
Aguillon’s team mate Tracy Mercado ruled the elementary girl’s 100 hurdles (18.86 seconds) while Dani Rose Ornopia of Area 2 won the silver (19.13 seconds) and Kim Shai Tangob of Area 1 took the bronze (19.38 seconds).
Angel Grace Lecaniel of Area 4 heaved the iron ball to a distance of 8 meters to win the gold in elementary girl’s shot put as Jamela de Asis of Area 5 (7.81 meters) and Diane Elizabeth Marco of Area 2 (7.22 meters) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Claire Abellano of Area 3 dominated the elementary girl’s 400 meters (1:05.19); Zaira Mae Villagante of Area 1 (1:08.09) for silver; and Michelle Flores of Area 5 (1:08.21) for bronze medal.
In elementary boy’s, Lynch Mananguil of Area 7 won the 400 meters clocking 1:00.49 seconds; Edmark Sta. Ana of Area 5 (1:03.94) settled for silver; and Samson Sudario of Area 4 (1:04.7), for bronze.
John Mark Mangao of Area 6 won the shotput in 9.25 meters, beating Area 4’s John Paul Plomeda (8.55) and June Philip Martinez (8.40).
Luke Mailem of Area 5 ruled the long jump with a leap of 4.70 meters over Rey Benedict Aboy of Area 8 in 4.51 meters; and Christian Niño Vidal of Area 1 with 4.41 meters.
Area 7’s Jose Jerry Belibestre and Alexis Soquiño, both of Romanito Maravilla High School, won the secondary boy’s long jump (6.66 meters) and 110 hurdles (14.68 seconds), respectively.
Area 4’s Mark Given Magallanes (6.55 meters) settled for silver behind Belibestre, while Area 2’s Cesar Fernandez (6.18 meters), for bronze.
Rudolf Dave Orbita of Area 4 (16.11 seconds) placed second behind Soquiño while Roniel Lowel Salvador of Area 1 (16.13 seconds) took the bronze.
